Joan Rivers’s Biography

Known for her sharp wit and cutting commentary, Joan Rivers broke new ground for female comedians with her daring routines. She defied the limits of what was acceptable humor when she started her career in the 1950s, and has continued to push the comedy envelope since then.

For years, Rivers played clubs in a variety of acts. She also spent some time at Chicago’s Second City theater group in the early 1960s, and did some comedy writing for television. In 1965, Rivers made her first appearance on The Tonight Show with host Johnny Carson. Carson was impressed with her routine and told her that she was ‘going to be a star.’ Some compared her performances to that of another controversial comic, Lenny Bruce, who once sent her a note of support that read ‘Joan, you’re right, they’re wrong.’

In addition to her work as a performer, Rivers put her writing talents to good use for other creative endeavors. Along with her husband and Lester Colodny, she co-wrote the 1971 comedic play Fun City. The short-lived show, which found humor in the everyday lives of a young urban couple, served as her Broadway debut. Rivers also wrote a screenplay for the 1973 television movie The Girl Most Likely To, the revenge fantasy of a former ugly duckling who dreams of getting back at those who hurt her in her younger days. She remained popular with television audiences, however, and was named the permanent guest host for The Tonight Show in 1983. For three years, Rivers filled in for Johnny Carson on a regular basis, delighting audiences with her jokes and tough manner as an interviewer. She often asked celebrity guests, ‘Can we talk?’ \a plea to make the conversation more candid and straightforward.

In 1996, Rivers teamed up with daughter Melissa to cover ed carpet events for the E! cable network. The two quizzed celebrities at these events regarding their outfits and offered up their own, sometimes brutal, critiques of fashions. Rivers became known for asking ‘Who are you wearing?’ The mother-daughter team moved on to the TV Guide channel in 2004. Their three-year deal with the network was reportedly worth $8 million.

While working as a commentator, Rivers also found time for other projects. She made guest appearances on such shows as Nip/Tuck, on which she spoofed her own image as a plastic-surgery-obsessed woman. With her distinctively raspy voice, Rivers did a lot of voice-over work for a number of animated films and programs, including Shrek 2.

Revamping her image, Rivers enjoyed a substantial career boost from her stint as a competitor on Donald Trump’s business competition The Celebrity Apprentice in 2009. She also had two books published that year, Men Are Stupid and They Like Big Boobs: A Woman’s Guide to Beauty through Plastic Surgery and Murder at the Academy Awards: A Red Carpet Murder Mystery. These were just the latest triumphs for Rivers. She has written a number of best-selling books, including the 1986 memoir Enter Talking and 1997′s Bouncing Back. In addition to her books, Rivers also runs a business empire. She sells a number of products, including clothing and make-up, on the home shopping network QVC.

Now in her 70s, Rivers shows no signs of retiring any time soon. She returned to the E! Entertainment network in 2010 to host Fashion Police red carpet specials. For the TVLand network, Rivers tries to find the secrets of success in How’d You Get So Rich?, which debuted in 2009.
